The Resurrection of the Speakeasy

If you think that the age of the speakeasy is somewhere lost back in the early part of the 20th century, in the jazz age of the 1920s, think again.

In the spirit of the speakeasy of that bygone era being well-hidden in order to keep it away from those who would enforce the laws of Prohibition, new speakeasies are now cropping up. These establishments are mostly hidden as well - but for a completely different reason. Today it’s to lend to the air of exclusivity and sophistication.

From, here is a list of seven latter-era speakeasies from around the world that have that have disguised themselves in clever ways. If you want to get inside, it helps to know where to look.

PDT (New York)

PDT (short for Please Don’t Tell) is one of the most exclusive speakeasies in the Big Apple. Hidden in the most unlikely place - a restaurant that specializes in hot dogs. PDT will serve just a few visitors at a time and guests enjoy mixed drinks or shaken cocktails served to them in comfortable leather booths.

Bank Bar (Manila)

If you ever find yourself in the Philippines, few come up to the class and distinction of the Bank Bar located in Manila's new Fort district. On the outset, it looks like any other 7-Eleven convenience store, but there is a distinct twist. Bank Bar is held in one of the two storerooms past the provisions to find a heavy curtain that reveals the Bank Bar.

Once visitors are inside the secret establishment, they are treated to a young and vibrant crowd along with DJ’s and dance music among a large collection of bottles and a cigar room for guests. Ounce (Taipei, Taiwan)

When in Taiwan, try to seek out the cocktail bar Ounce. This speakeasy is hidden behind a secret door in an unlikely place - a neighborhood cafe.

If you are lucky enough to have actually found your way inside this speakeasy, the staff will engage guests in conversation. Usually that just enough to determine just what the perfect drink is -and made just for them. Ounce can be found at| No.40, Lane 63, Sec 2 Dunhua South Road, Taipei Taiwan.

Lulu White (Paris)

What review of exclusive establishments would be complete without one in the City of Lights? At the La Belle Époque decorated establishment known as Lulu White located in South Pigalle, there is a definite flavor that exclusively French.

This Parisian speakeasy is named for an African-American madam who ran a brothel in the French Quarter of New Orleans during the first part of the 1900s. Because there is no signage, would-be connoisseurs may have a bit of a difficult time locating it. Once there, Lulu White features Absinthe as a specialty cocktail ingredient. Foxglove (Hong Kong)

Hiding behind a the facade of an antique umbrella shop that was "Established 1868,” is this beautiful speakeasy. Visitors enter through the passageway and press down on a certain umbrella - somewhere stashed among many.

Floreria Atlantico (Buenos Aires)

Located inside a florist’s shop that also sells wine in Buenos Aires’ Retiro neighborhood. To gain entrance, find the refrigerator. Behind this bit of trompe l’oeil is the door that leads down to a bar in the basement that features decor of sea monsters painted on concrete.

This cozy atmosphere turns many visitors to this speakeasy into regulars with a mix of both shared plates and handcrafted cocktails. When you find them at Floreria Atlantico | Arroyo 872, Buenos Aires Argentina, you will find the night has passed into the next day.

Adults Only (Los Angeles)

Located in the lap of Lala Land, this speakeasy’s name gives a hint of how to access it. Located inside a doorway in an adult video shop located in a Sunset Boulevard mall behind a burger King, Adult’s Only feels a whole lot like Hollywood in a bygone era once you step through the secreted entrance.

Among the exposed brick and stained glass are framed vintage movie posters and films projected for that vintage feel. Drinks served at this speakeasy feature names that come from terminology of the porn industry. Adults Only is located at 7065 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles; (323) 469 0040.
